Spring has Sprung YAHOO! That was a little tougher winter than we have seen in a few years. The older I
get the more I dislike winter, but it is Michigan after all, so what should we expect?! I know this is probably
sacrosanct coming from a leader of a whitetail co-op, but spring is fast becoming my favorite season. Now
that we have several bucks make it through the hunting season I really enjoy shed hunting. There was a
time when I rarely ever found a shed and I often wondered why. Well the answer was pretty simple really.
A buck needs to be alive in order to shed his antlers and back in the day we killed nearly all our antlered
bucks in this area during deer season. Last year was my most successful shed hunting year so far. We (my
son Craig, my granddaughter Elle and my Bavarian Mountain Hound Agnes and I) found about 15 sheds
total. We also found a matching set about 10’ apart, which was the biggest shed we have ever found and
was pretty cool! Unfortunately, we never saw him this past deer season. I have also fallen deeply in love
with turkey hunting. I can honestly say I enjoy turkey hunting as much as I do deer hunting. I know ~ how
can that be right? Well, here are some of the reasons. First of all, I love the interaction. The calling and
getting that gobble response is addicting. Listening to gobbles first thing in the morning reminds me of
when we went out west Elk hunting and I heard my first bugle. It is so exciting every time. Plus it’s no
pressure hunting, you don’t have to worry about scent control, blinds, wind direction, enter or exit route.
Just plop down next to a tree and hunt. Team Hunt ~ turkey hunting is much more social hunting with
someone and it is a blast. It’s a great way to introduce someone to hunting in a low stress environment.
