2026 Flat River Youth Small Game Hunt

The Michigan National Deer Association (Michigan NDA) was honored to partner with the Michigan Squirrel Dog Association, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources—Flat River Wildlife Field Office and staff—and the Belding Sportsman’s Club to co-sponsor the 2026 Flat River Youth Small Game Hunt.

This year’s event marked a major milestone, welcoming a record 54 youth hunters and hosting more than 100 total participants for breakfast and lunch—the largest turnout in the hunt’s history. Despite a blustery winter day, every youth hunter had the opportunity to hunt behind a trained squirrel or rabbit dog, resulting in the successful harvest of over 30 squirrels.

Following the hunt, participants took part in hands-on education, learning how to properly process and prepare small game for consumption. Youth hunters also enjoyed prize giveaways, rounding out a day focused on outdoor skills, conservation, and fun. Feedback from youth participants and their parents or guardians was overwhelmingly positive.

Michigan NDA was proud to support an event that not only celebrates Michigan’s hunting heritage but also plays a vital role in introducing the next generation to the outdoors. Helping youth build confidence, skills, and a lifelong appreciation for hunting and conservation remains a cornerstone of Michigan NDA’s mission.
